What is English Experience?

Join English Experience this year to enrich your time in our adopted country of England while we explore various periods in English History, with a ‘twist’.   In addition to the history of the period, we will learn about the influential women, the social practices, and architectural influences of the time.  Our 2010/2011 lecture series will be conducted by some of our tried and true Blue Badge guides, noted authors as well as several experts in English history.  We will begin with the medieval period; the Age of Kingship, the Golden Age of Chivalry and Katherine Swynford.  We will then move on to the Reformation – The Birth of Modern England and the Influence of Anne Boleyn; and Beauties of the Restoration and Georgian Courts - From Nell Gwyn to Henrietta Howard.

Our tours are closely linked with the lecture series.  One of the most wonderful things about England, is that many historical places still exist and are able to be visited. We provide all types of tours from specialty London tours to coach-driven, custom day trips.  All you need to do is sit back, relax, have a cup of tea, a lovely lunch and enjoy the day!  Also this year is the return of the very popular ‘overnights’ – one in the autumn and one in the spring.  Some planned tours this year will include: Penshurst Place, Berkeley Castle and Gloucester Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, Kenilworth and Stoneleigh Abbey, York, York Minster, and Castle Howard.

English Experience lecture series is not limited in size.  AWS members are always invited to attend on a per lecture basis.  Members, for full schedule and detail of lectures and tours please click here.

If you enjoy reading, a wonderful way to deepen your knowledge on our topics is to join our EE book group.  Click the link to check out what is on the agenda for this session.

Thursday, 9 September: Lecture: The Three Richards PDF Print E-mail
English Experience

We are very excited to have as our guest speaker, a history professor from Royal Hollaway, University of London.  He is an expert in Medieval English History and has had many publications including The Three Richards(Hambledon and London, 2005) ;  Richard II(New Haven and London, 1997);  Death, Art and Memory in Medieval England. The Cobham Family and their Monuments 1300-1500 (Oxford, 2001); Knights and Esquires. The Gloucestershire Gentry in the Fourteenth Century (Oxford, 1981).  Professor Saul will be speaking to us about The Three Richards.

The Three Richards

Richard is a minority name among England’s kings.  We have had eight Edwards, eight Henrys, but only three Richards.  Why?  And what’s distinctive about the Richards?  Do they have anything but the name in common?  The lecture will explore the theme of nominal eugenics, highlighting, in particular, the influence of the first Richard – Richard the Lionheart – on those who came after him, and offering observations on the character and belief of the most notorious of the three, Richard III.
